#017 STATE OR PRIVATE

Two things deserve our attention.

APPOINTMENT OF LIQUOR CONTRACTORS AS CHAIRMEN OF TEMPLES
1. Baba Ramdev, yoga guru critised the appointment of 'unworthy' persons to head religious bodies like T.T.D., Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India. The Government of Andhra Pradesh appointed Shri D.K. Adikeshavulu Naidu, a liquor contractor, as the Chairman of the Trust Board of T.T.D. He is also a politician of the ruling party, Congress. Deccan Herald newspaper reported: "Adikeshavulu, however, responded by saying he had given up liquor business before entering politics and was eligible for the post of chairman of TTD. He was appointed a few days after he was thrown out of TDP for voting in favour of the ruling UPA government during the vote on the nuclear deal in Parliament. He was promptly appointed by the Congress government apparently as a reward to the highly prestigious post."

The response given by the TTD Chairman, as seen on T.V. Channels is very rude and lacks courtesy.

HIGH COURT PERMITTING GOVERNMENT TO APPOINT EXECUTIVE OFFICERS TO TEMPLES
2. The Madras High Court dismissed the petition filed by Dikshitars, the hereditary priests challenging the appointment of an Executive Officer for the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram.

BLOGGER'S VIEWS
The first instance indicates clearly how politicians can subvert the management of sacred places like temples for their own political purposes.

The second instance shows how the hereditary priests and trustees treat the temples as personal fiefdoms.

Hindus seem to have been caught between the devil and the deep sea.
